New on the easel

I made a start on Harper’s portrait yesterday afternoon :). A stunning fox red Labrador. The reference photograph I have been given to use for this drawing has a lovely amount of chest. The lighting is lovely so it seemed fitting to add a natural background and continue the chest all the way to the bottom of the paper. This was all designed in a photo editor first and this was the layout the client most preferred. Replicating her being outside enjoying the sunshine creating that strong lighting which will be great to capture.

Here the first few base layers for the background are going down. I normally leave the background 3/4 finished and then start the subject. Once the subject is almost finished I usually then go back and refine the background to best compliment the piece.
