Harper update

Yesterday I spent the day working on Harper’s portrait. A stunning fox red Labrador. I had a couple of options for this portrait in terms of what background would work best. The reference photograph I was given for this portrait had a lovely amount of chest and body. So it was decided that I would draw all of the photograph of her rather than fade out her chest as I typically have to do. Fading out the chest in some cases is the best option for certain portrait if the chest isn’t included in the reference photograph. There have been many instances where I have used other photographs where the dog is in a similar position and I have added the chest to the portrait.

But for Harper the photo was perfect. I sent 10 layouts of various backgrounds and the one they liked the most was this natural sky and foliage effect background. The photo of Harper was taken outside in bright sunshine so her coat is glowing. This makes the natural outside background seem as though this was the background in the photograph so compliments it perfectly.
