This was and is still to date the largest painting I have ever done. This painting took me ages to complete for a few reasons. The first being the downside of oils which is the drying time. As I work in many many layers which have to be completely dry before you add the next this does dramatically extend the process from start to finish. The other reason was I was very much new to painting scenic backgrounds so this piece was a lot of trial and error in some instances.

I was elated that this piece sold within the first hour of my exhibition launch evening. My exhibition launch was a 2 hour evening slot at my local gallery and I was overwhelmed to see that all of my pieces including some graphite drawings but 3 smaller pieces had all sold. I won this gallery slot in a competition which I entered and won after one of my paintings got the most votes.
It took a good couple of years to build up my wildlife portfolio which was mainly because I was doing my paintings alongside my full time job.

A Learning Process
Looking back 4 years on from when I completed this wolf painting I realise how much I have grown as an artist. I have been doing my artwork full time for the last 2 years and its been the best decision I ever made.

One big change I would make to this piece if I were to do it again (which I wouldn’t do as I never paint or draw the same thing twice) is how I tackle the background. I have since added a airbrush set up to my must tools. This would have created a much softer background making the wolves seem that much more 3D adding more dimension to the piece. I’d add a lot more texture to the foreground mud area. I would have therefore opted to do this piece in acrylic paints instead of oils. Massively speeding up the process between layers. I only added acrylics to my materials earlier this year and love them!

‘Wolf Peak’ professionally framed by my local framer

I completed this painting at the end of 2015 and it was then the centre piece for my debut exhibition in May 2016.
