Fur textures like this may not have lots of individual details at every layer. Usually, the fur is more clumped together but building the values to create depth before adding finer details will maximise the realism for this fur type. If to many details are added early on, then the fur can take on a more wiry appearance which wouldn't be right here. ...

My latest pastel drawing is finished ❄️. A festive feel to this and a piece that I created using multiple reference photos. I love creating art like this because it enables the option of fully exploring our artist license to make the drawing exactly how we want it.

An aspect of this that I really wanted to capture was the importance of cool and warm colours and how those are reflected onto fur in a way that enhances depth. However, the layering of the pastel is really important here because if the blue that is being reflected from the snow and glacia was added at the wrong stage onto the yellows of the fur, it would create a green tint which would give the impression that the Polar Bear was on grass which obviously is not what is required here.

Keeping these colours separated and not mixing is all in how they are applied at the right time. This is a smaller drawing so not room for loads of fine detail but by ensuring the values and contrast are correct, is what creates the 3D and realism of the piece.
