Painting really fine details is easier when the surface we're painting on is smoother. If a canvas is toothier I'll always add a couple of coats of gesso to get the surface just right =). ...

I love drawing horses in pastels. I think it's such a good medium for this subject because of the ability to easily soften details which when drawing very short hair/fur can make such a difference. Short fur can look to coarse if the pencil details are to harsh so by softening them as we work it helps to enhance the depth and realism. This is one of the cases where less is more.

When aiming for that extra level of realism in any medium, the extra attention to the layering process makes a huge difference. In this smaller section I am aiming for lots of intricate detail but I can't get to that stage until the foundation is right.

The foundation isn't just about blocking in a solid base but I find that hinting at the main groupings of highlights and shadows with a softness to that layer will help with the detailing later on.

I like to use at least 3 different brush types to ensure that each layer of texture/detail is varied. How we use that brush can also be adjusted to create another type of brush stroke and I find this combination helps with the layering process to add more depth and therefore realism to the piece.
