Lioness on the easel..

A4 (8.3″ x 11.7) Colour Pencil Drawing
Reference photo: Stephanie Swayne @ Wildlife Reference Photos

This is one of my current wildlife colour pencil portraits which I’m yet to finish. I am working on this in between pet portraits but hope to have it finished by Christmas.

I chose this reference photograph because I love the cropped angle and how that makes the subject really fill the page. This was similar to my graphite Gorilla portrait (over at my ‘Sold Artwork’.

I have adjusted the colour in this Lioness piece and made her more of richer in colour. An absolutely beautiful animal which has been good fun working on. The above video clip is a short peak into how I layer and achieve the fine detail. Although not finished, these sections are 90% complete with only some final details and tweaks to be made.

When I work I do like to work in small sections and get those areas near completion before moving on. I find this helps me to focus on the portrait and enables me to feel the portrait is becoming more complete. Its how I’ve always worked :).
