Meet Ludo. He was my first full body horse portrait I was asked to do – and what a beautiful subject I had to draw.
The reference photograph was taken at such a great and unique angle it made for a perfect portrait. The bright sunlight made him really shine and the low angle shot meant the darkest shadows were captured. I was so excited when I got to start this portrait.

This drawing was an A3 (11.7″ x 16.5″) size so that meant I was able to fill the page. It meant that although it was a full body portrait I still had enough space to add the details.
This drawing definitely helped to improve my graphite drawing skills. I had to really focus on using my blending stumps and a new medium to me which I know cant work without … Graphite powder! I then used my Sofft Tools to apply this and wow did it create a beautifully soft well blended look I needed.
Explaining how I used these tools is best to be seen. So here is a video showing how I tackled Ludo’s portrait 🙂
