Penguin Family

12″ x 16″ Acrylic on pre-stretched canvas
* Original for sale *

Now that I have completed my Christmas pet portrait commissions as mentioned in yesterdays post I have this time to focus on some wildlife pieces.

The planning..
I have had this portrait planned for a couple of months. I sourced many reference photographs for this and adapted it to create something unique. I knew I wanted a glacial scene for the background and then have a minimal foreground to ensure all focus remained on the Emperor Penguin family.

Step by step..
When I approach pieces like this I usually always start with the background. I then put my basic subject outline on the top. The first layers always look terrible and it goes through many ‘ugly stages’.

Once the Penguins are finished I then normally go back and rework the background if needed. Sometimes it’s only when the main subject is in that you can judge the depth of the background easier. For this piece I managed to get this pretty much accurate in the first instance so didn’t have to tweak the background at all.

Once the painting has dried it will be varnished and then will be ready to go to its new home. I continue the background round on all 4 edges which makes them ideal for hanging straight on the wall. I send out all my canvases ready to hang with strong framing cord etc.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you’d like more information on purchasing any of my original artwork.
