I have been working on my Hare painting any spare minutes I have. It’s slowly coming together and I’m working past all the ugly stages that artists often hit! Before, I used to get so frustrated and in some cases throw my paintings away because I felt I had ruined it or wasn’t going to achieve the finish I had in my mind. But I now know from experience and working through these ‘ugly stages’ that its not a matter of ruining it but it just means you aren’t finished. These base layers that you have to put down before you can start to add any more detailed, precise layers will always be the worst. But the more you add the better more realistic you’re painting will be.

I definitely find I hit these first ugly stages more with paintings than colour pencil. Because you cant layer the same with colour pencil because you cannot put light over dark and you have to be far more accurate with the layers you put down I achieve more of a detailed outcome in one small section before moving on to the next. Whereas with painting because of the drying time you have to work in full layers. Fill in the entire subject (if you have enough time in one sitting to do this). Then by the time that is dry you can go back and add the next layer. Each layer you add you refine the tones and values. Only then can I start to add the fur direction detail. Then to follow I glaze.
