Meet Sadie

Last week I finished this portrait of Sadie. Two of my favourite things to draw were in her portrait - black fur and curly fur. So this was a portrait where I didn't want to put the pencils down. Sadie's portrait then made it's journey home to the USA :).    For those who follow my tutorials I have a video on Patreon showing you how I tackle this fur type. Head over to my Patreon...

RED PANDA PAINTING

My latest wildlife painting fresh off the easel is this adorable Red Panda. I loved working on this one and enjoyed the challenge of the additional elements within this painting. I stumbled across the beautiful reference photo I used for this and new I had to paint it.  The original Red Panda painting is now up for sale and looking for its new home. More details of the painting can be found ...

GOLDEN RETRIEVER DRAWING IN PASTELS

One of my Christmas commissions was this portrait of Jazmin. A beautiful Golden Retriever with the smiliest expression. I had already drawn one of the other family dogs a couple of months before. This portrait was done in pastels and that ensured the softness of her fur was captured along with those subtle colours. For her portrait, given the angle of the reference photograph, we opted for a squar...

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE COLOURS I was asked by a Patreon member to create a pastel tutorial focusing on iridescent feathers. I immediately wanted to draw either a Hummingbird or Kingfisher and after looking for reference photos settled on this. I have added a completely different background adding even more colour and a bit of a magical feel.  This first update shows the background and I decid...

HOW TO PAINT SHORT, BLACK FUR

HOW TO PAINT SHORT, BLACK FUR IN ACRYLICS When painting black fur like this I typically work from dark to light. Numerous layers which will build depth and therefore more realism in the finished painting. Like always, I want to focus on my contrast and values. Ensuring my highlights are bright and shadows are dark. That will capture the sheen on the coat typically seen on Black Labradors.&nbs...

MEET JASPER

Jasper Jasper is one of the latest dogs fresh off my easel. Sadly, no longer with us and his family miss him dearly. Loosing them is the worst part about sharing life with them but they provide so many wonderful memories for us to cherish. When I am asked to capture peoples much loved pets I want to capture that pet not just a Jack Russell.  I spend days, sometimes weeks on a single portrai...
