Varnishing my paintings

Vanishing your paintings is really important. I have only ever used one type of varnish and as it's worked so well and I am pleased with the results I've never needed to change. Why I use spray varnish..My preference has always been spray varnishes. You can purchased liquid varnish which you pour onto your work and then brush across evenly. This has never been a method I wanted to try for a c...

New Giraffe planned :)

Last year I did a coloured pencil drawing of a Giraffe. It was a reference photo I took myself during a trip to my local zoo. This next Giraffe piece I have planned will be completely different and I think, although not 100% sure, that this will be in acrylics on canvas. Here is the Giraffe I did which sold immediately after sharing it on my social media :).

Orangutan video!

My recent Orangutan painting time lapse video is uploaded to my YouTube channel! There were so many hours of footage so this took a little longer to edit together. There is a section mid way through where I took a photo of the painting on my phone but didn't turn off the camera! Pro haha. This took hours to upload! So I didn't want to go back and try and remove it all for a split second :). ...

Orangutans are finished :)

This has been a real joy to paint. I have enjoyed every minute spent and there have been many hours work gone into this piece. The level of detail I wanted to add meant that no part of this piece could be rushed. I wanted it to be one of the most realistic pieces I have created to date. I am always trying to improve my artwork any way I can and I am always trying to create photo realistic ar...

Something new.. People!

Occasionally I get asked to draw something different. Something that challenges me and gives me an opportunity to learn new skills, techniques and in this case textures! There were a few elements of this piece which were new to me and I had to experiment on a scrap piece of paper to find the best way of tackling them. The first was the blanket the newborn baby was wrapped in. It was similar to...

National Frog Month!

April is National Frog Month! Frogs are fascinating creatures and with over 4,000 species of frogs they come in a range of colours from all over the world. I have only done 1 frog portrait and this is it. The Red Eyed Tree Frog in this vibrant yellow flower was what drew me to the reference. That vibrancy against the black worked so well for my techniques. As you know I LOVE drawing on black back...

Orangutan update!

This will be the last update before I share the finished painting with you :D. I have finished it and just waiting for it to dry before I vanish it. Although... I do think I want to tweak one area and add a very subtle highlight so this may delay the varnishing process by a few days. I have put the painting aside and will look at it with fresh eyes and see if I want to tweak parts. The origin...

New Lion Wildlife Painting!

Fresh off the easel is this pair of Lions <3. For this piece I had a lovely photograph by Terence Porter where he captured that emotion and affection so perfectly. I wanted to focus purely on that so I hyped up the contrast and focused on values. I wanted to draw the attention right to them both which I hope I have achieved. This original piece is available and ready for its new home. F...

Lily photo vs drawing

I should make more of these really! Just so you can see what I have worked from and the realism I strive to achieve in each portrait. A good photo is key..One of the key things to creating a highly detailed and realistic portrait is the reference you are working from. As an artist who is always wanting to capture the personality and character of each of my subjects this is always more achieva...
