Finished Portraits

Meet Koda

Koda was another surprise Christmas commission I had the pleasure of drawing. I absolutely loved working on her portrait because it was that much larger. It enabled me to capture even more detail. 14" x 20" is probably one of my favourite sizes for this reason. Her colours were a joy to capture especially with the softness of pastels. 14" x 20" Pastel portrait Full length tutorial comin...

Avatar, Alfie & Leo

I completely forgot to share this finished portrait :). Leo the Labrador and those lovely colours was a pleasure to capture. So many different fur types, textures and colours within this portrait. Getting the right balance is key. There are a few options when designing layouts with more than 2 subjects so what I do is make the ones I think would work and sending that selection to the client. They...

Festive Robin..

Being the run up to Christmas I wanted to do a festive theme and what better subject than the Robin. Creating that cyan blue background with the snow was probably my favourite part. As soon as the snow was added I felt like this pastel portrait was complete. I haven't been able to share it with...

Maisey & Lexie are finished!

Well, here it is! AT LAST! What a relief to be able to call this massive project finished. This painting is big... At the time I thought it was a good idea and then after a few days I realised this was going to take me ages. So many hours went into this painting - I lost count and realised its pretty much life size... Also, you would not believe how long it took for us to get this photo! People...

Black backgrounds..

One of my favourite ways to work is against a black background. I think it creates an effect that for some photographs is perfect. I then of course adapt my work from the photograph and change the lighting, contrast and composition. Whether its colour pencils and pastels on black paper or acrylics on a black airbrushed background the end goal is the same. I haven't yet tried it with pastels this ...

Meet Willow

I can now share with you this surprise commission :). When I was asked to capture Willow in this pastel portrait I couldn't wait to start it.
